Thank you very much for putting this info up Dave. Joseph Brogden is my great grandmothers younger brother. She was Alice Brogden and after marrying my great grandfather, they were living in the next street to JB (Acorn Street) in 1916.

This is an amazing find for me as I did'nt have any real details other than the info from CWGC and Ancestery, to find a photo and newspaper report is fantastic.

Would this report be from the Evening Post ?

Hi Mick

Glad to be of help. I found the image in The Yorkshire Evening News, Wednesday, 1 December 1915. I can't be sure, but it is possible that the death of Joseph Brogden was reported in other newspapers held in Leeds Library. There are quite a few to choose from. The Yorkshire Evening Post would be a good place to start.

PS: Just looking at CWGC and there is a Pte Edward Farr of the 2nd West Yorks listed amongst the dead in 1916. No further details unfortunately, and I wouldn't want to speculate or suggest that it is the same person, but it would be interesting to see how the friendship had developed - neighbours, workmates, or training, etc.

I looked on Ancestery, just out of interest and there was an Edward Farr in 1901 living in Bread Street in the same area, so they may have been pre-war mates, but like you say its just speculation.

This is probably the wrong part of the forum, but do you recommend the book, "West Yorkshire Regiment in the War 1914-1918" by Everard Wyrall ? I'm new to all this research and I have a fair few people on the family tree serving in various battalions of the West Yorks. Obviously I know they rarely mention the names of common soldiers but I'd like to get a general idea of what their respective battalions were upto at the times they were with them.

Tricky one this Mick. I have used Wyrall in my own area of research and found him somewhat lacking in the main part of the text, but Wyrall does provide more than a good overview of some of the battalions if that's what you're looking for. There is also a good roll of honour to the lads at the back of each volume (I used this when compiling my own roll to the 10th West Yorks)

It looks like The Naval and Military Press are selling both volumes for £22. This looks quite cheap. Give them a call before you buy. You could always order over the phone if you do decide to buy.

I've just been giving some thought to war memorials, and wondering if it's worth contacting St. Pat's Church. The old one - which is now used by West Yorkshire Playhouse - house two either side of the altar I believe. A Book of Remembrance is held in the new church on Torre Road. Both myself and Nigel Marshall have made enquiries in the past, but to no avail unfortunately. Third time lucky perhaps?

Cheers for that Dave, it might be worth my while taking a trip down there. Most of my family before the second war were married in the old St Pats, so there's a chance they might be on those memorials.

I am sure you are probably aware, but there is a James Brogden - a Driver serving with the RFA - amongst the service records on Ancestry. Address: 29 Acorn Street, Leeds. There are twenty images in all.

Cheers for that Dave, I looked it up last night.

Its probably odds on that he's one of my Brogdens, they move between different houses in Acorn St and the York Rd area with every census. I'm presuming he's one of my great grandmothers brothers children. Several are unmarried in 1891 and he's born around 1896. I just have'nt managed to confirm it yet as I can't find some of them on the 1901 census. (presuming they're still alive).

I took this photo while the memorial was in storage at the Leeds Armouries. There's no caption or note as to where the memorial came from, but many of the ones that were in storage have now been mounted in the the Leeds Town Hall. Some are named: The Leeds Stock Exchange and Branch Road Church, Armley.
