Some drill hall premises were used and re-used; for example, Stockport Armoury, which is still in use, was built in 1862 and Heckmondwyke Artillery was 1867. Some were / are recycled premises; e.g. Hale, Cheshire, was an 1872 ice rink and many are former chapels, e.g. Skelton was a Wesleyan chapel built in 1813. Both the latter have been demolished. Last year we presented some information about the recycling of drill halls to a planning inquiry and have quite a body of examples.

Therefore, illustrations and even descriptions in publications such as The Builder may well be relevant.

I've just downloaded and transcribed just under two thousand references from The [Manchester] Guardian archive. Curiously, Yorkshire drill halls hardly get a mention, except for Huddersfield, which has a lot. Your pieces will complement those we have.

Out of interest - and this is bothering me somewhat - what is the copyright position in quoting chunks of old newspapers that are in themselves out of copyright, but have been digitised? We've always been allowed to publish images of out of copyright newspapers on the website, but in those cases I've been working from the newspaper in the relevant library, or its image on film, and librarians have seen no problems. The ILN told me I could do what I liked with out of copyright pictures and articles - I have that in writing. We always acknowledge sources.

I know we could contact the relevant papers when the time comes. We have so much material to upload that the problem won't arise for a while.

I use the same approach. I tend to contact the newspaper group by phone and ask to speak to the editor if in doubt - and then back up with e-mail. They've all been very helpful and the advice is always to fully reference. I do the same with ALL information passed on or enquiries made: including sources which may be useful in support.

The link to The Builder isn't particularly good. I last used the source a few years ago in preparation for a piece on municipal and private/joint-stock cemeteries [burial reform, etc]. It had a page counter thingy-ma-do-dah then which made searching much easier. It seems to have disappeared. I'll take a look in the hard copy at some point and post any findings.

I'll place the following on this thread if I may, Gwyn. It's what I would call the "proposed" and "propagandist" - a plan to re-order the space around Horse Guards Parade.
